Lot Essay

W. Skeoch Cumming, whose name is inscribed on the box and who provides the subject of the book, was an artist and designer of tapestry. Born 1864 and died 1929 he had a passion for everything Celtic and collected old tartan fragments. He designed tapestry for Lord Bute and revived the art of tapestry making at Scotland at a site called the Dovecot at Corstorphine.
