The oblong body with deep rectangular trough and thin sides, the rear legs fused, the front legs separate, the saucer-shaped head with two flat ovoid ears at front and with straight trunk, the surface with various configurations of differently sized circles, concentric, overlapping and in rows, the rim with a few chips to one side, other side restored

Lot Essay

A number of grey schist vessels were excavated at Nishapur by the Metropolitan Museum between 1935 and 1940. Most of the vessels are of known forms such as the following lot. The present vessel in the form of an elephant is extremely unusual.
