Lot Essay

The gold painted naskh inscription around the body reads al-'izz al-da'im , wa al-iqbal [al-za'id] , wa al-surur [wa] al-sa'ada wa , al-'afiya wa , al-baqa [li-sahibihi] 'Perpetual Glory, and increasing Prosperity and Joy and Happiness and Well-being and Health and Long-life to its owner'

The kufic around the base is undeciphered.

The form of this vessels derives clearly from metalwork. It can be found in this size and smaller in inkwells, as well as a larger version which was probably used for food. The decoration on this with its gold script means that it would more probably have been seen as a luxury item such as an inkwell.
