The kufic around the base is undeciphered.
The form of this vessels derives clearly from metalwork. It can be found in this size and smaller in inkwells, as well as a larger version which was probably used for food. The decoration on this with its gold script means that it would more probably have been seen as a luxury item such as an inkwell.
