TURKEY, PERIOD OF SULTAN MUSTAFA III (1757-1774 AD)
Of typical form with rectangular section long tubular pencase with pronounced rounded ends, one hinged, one end with a rectangular section barrel-shaped inkwell, the ends and sides delicately engraved with flowering sprays and vases and with traces of gilding, stamped with tughra of Sultan Mustafa III, later engraved NM16.IV.1942

Lot Essay

The later engraved inscription is a dedication to Numan Menemencioglu who was a government minister in various posts and at the time of this donation was the Foreign Minister of Turkey. The penbox has passed from him to the present owner through inheritance.
