Lot Essay

A filigree casket in the Museum Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon, with cover of very similar form, has been dated to the seventeenth century (Mughal Silver Magnificence, exhibition catalogue, Brussels, 1987, no. 225, p. 152). The same casket, together with another one whose cover is simply rounded but which is on the same feet as are found under ours, is published in Bernado Ferrão, Mobiliário Português, Índia e Japão, Porto, 1990, nos.404 and 405, pp.125-6).
