A GOLD DAMASCENED AND ENGRAVED STEEL DAGGER (PESH KABZ)
IRAN, LATE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The tapering single-edged watered steel blade with strong upper ridge and finely engraved floral panel at forte within a gold-inlaid line, the spine with small flower at base, the walrus-ivory-faced hilt with central steel band carved with a row of bird cartouches each with a gold ground, very slight damage to gold inlay

Lot Essay

The only Salih recorded is the maker of a half-moon knife dated by James Allan to the early 19th century. He says no other steel pieces by Salih are recorded, (J. Allan, & B. Gilmour, Persian Steel, The Tanavoli Collection, Oxford Studies in Islamic Art, XV, OUP, 2000, pp. 375-6).
