Lot Essay

The lattice of three entwined stems that is found here is a common feature of Safavid design of the 17th century, appearing on carpets as well as tile panels. A very good example with very similar colouring to that found here is in the Masjid-i Shah in Isfahan (Gerard Degeorge and Yves Porter, The Arts of the Islamic Tile, Paris, 2002, p.148).
