Lot Essay

This painting is worked from an official photograph of Nasir al-Din Shah posing by a chair, published in Layla Diba and Maryam Ekhtiar, Royal Persian Paintings: The Qajar Epoch 1785-1925, New York, 1998, no.87, p.262. The following page (no.88, p.263) illustrates a watercolour made after that photograph, rather different in appearance from the present oil.
