The inscription is the first part of a Lûshi poem from 754 by the famous Chinese poet Li Bai (701-762) who wrote it when saying goodbye to a friend. Freely translated into English the poem reads: Green mountains laying around the suburb in the north, in the east white water surrounds the city, this is where our ways part, and you dragged ten thousand miles as a dodder
