Lot Essay

The present box is a good example of the work of the Hering family. It was made using a mould, the straw which was first dyed, split and flattened, would be pressed into a mould, cut out into seperate pieces and re-assembled. Therefore it is possible to have more than one box with identical scenes but other colour distribution. The initials C.F.V.L. engraved into the inside of the box, was one of several used by the Hering family, a german dynasty of straw-marqueteurs. Between 1694 and 1736 they first worked in the German hanseatic port of Lübeck then moved to Leiden and later to London. Their work is usually dated between 1711 and 1736. Examples of the Herings' works are in German and English museums as well as in private collections. See also C. Baumgartner, La Marqueterie de Paille, Turin, 2004, p.18-20.
