Sinking of the Titanic, 1912
Presentation bronze medal, the gift of Mrs J.J. Brown of Denver [a prominent survivor from the stricken liner] to the officers and men of the Cunard steamship Carpathia. Obverse: the Carpathia hove-to amidst icebergs picking up survivors from Titanic's boats alongside, the scene within elaborate 'marine' border. Reverse: inscribed "Presented to the Captain, Officers and crew of R.M.S. Carpathia, in recognition of gallant and heroic services, from the survivors of the S.S. Titanic, April 15th 1912". With integral ring for suspension. (Almost extremely fine and rare)

Mrs James J. Brown, the Denver millionairess affectionately known after the disaster as "the unsinkable Molly Brown", was the leading member of the Titanic survivor's committee which, apart from aiding those made destitute by the disaster, also decided that the crew of the Carpathia be rewarded by means of a suitable medal. Prepared at some speed, these medals [in gold, silver or bronze as appropriate] were presented to Captain Rostron and his men when the Carpathia docked in New York on May 29th 1912, her first call there since the disaster. In addition to a gold medal, Captain Rostron additionally received a large engraved silver loving cup from Mrs Brown at the widely-publicized ceremony which bordered on the adulatory.
