When Patek Philippe introduced the reference 3448, with the famed caliber 27-460, in 1962 it represented the first automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch to be manufactured. Patek Philippe later updated the caliber and released the 27-460 Q with the patented pepertual mechanism fitted on the movement plate under the dial.
In 1981, the reference 3450 was debuted now incorporating the further improved caliber 27-460 QB (Quantieme Bisextile). Another difference between the 3448 and the 3450 was in the addition of a leap year indication between three and four o'clock. The first series of the reference 3450 was made with Arabic numerals and a simple red disc for the leap year, where as the second series featured Roman numerals. In total, Patek Philippe produced 244 examples of the reference 3450, mostly in yellow gold cases. Both the references 3448 and 3450 were discontinued in 1985 with the introduction of the reference 3940.
