George Arnald was born in Farndip, Northamptonshire and was taught by William Pether. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1788 and continued to do so for the next fifty years. He was made an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1810 and in 1819 was appointed landscape painter to the Duke of Gloucester. Arnald's chief triumph came in 1825 when he won the British Institution's £500 prize for the best picture of the Battle of the Nile, The picture hangs in the Royal Naval Hospital, Greenwich. Arnald travelled extensive throughout the country as well as many tours on the continent and a painting expedition to Ireland with John Varley.
