The upper part with a three-quarter gallery, six short and two long red-leather covered drawers with enclosed compartments, the lower part with a hinged tooled leather-lined surface and three drawers, on square tapering legs joined by a concave undertier with a folding foot rest, on brass caps, possibly adapted and legs possibly later and re-veneered

Lot Essay

This form of 'bonheur-du-jour' secretaire, with hinged writing-fall accompanied by drawer-nests in a galleried 'gradin', became popular in the 1770s. Its rare feature of a foot-stool incorporated in the stretcher-tray, also appeared on another bonheur du jour, with herm tapered legs, sold Sotheby's London, 14 June 1968, lot 116.
