The design of these chairs is a combination of patterns by Gillows included in their Estimate Sketch Book now preserved in the Westminster archives. The shield back and the form of the arm supports feature in a design for a 'shield-back chair' of about 1785-90 whilst the feather design and sun-flower motif appear on a design for a 'drapery and feather back armchair' both reproduced in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, figs. 266 and 273 respectively.
