Lot Essay

Similar leaf-carved scroll crests and broadly downscrolled arms feature in the documented work of the Edinburgh cabinet-maker William Trotter (F. Bamford, 'A Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers 1600-1840', Furniture History, 1983, pls. 50 and 65.). A set of eight chairs of related design and with typical squared paw feet also associated with Trotter was offered in 'Christopher Howe: The First 20 Years', Christie's, London, 24 March 2004, lot 198.
