The glazed arched hood with outset pilasters over a rectangular case door decorated with courtly figures within pavilions above a rectangular base and footed plinth, the brass dial with silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic chapters enclosing a matte center, seconds dial (lacking hand), and calendar aperture within mask and scroll spandrels beneath the arch with maker's plaque John Dewe/London flanked by dolphins, two-train movement with anchor escapement and four ringed pillars, restorations to decoration, works apparently inoperable at present

Lot Essay

John Dewe is recorded working in Southwark, London from 1726. He was made free of the Clockmaker's Company from 1733-1764. Baillie records a lacquer longcase clock by this maker. His son, also John, was active from 1764, presumably carrying on his father's business.
