The present lot shows a quiet scene in Amsterdam. The waters of the Waals Eilandsgracht (the location has been confimed by the achives of the RKD, The Hague) are still except for a slight ripple caused by a single boat pushed forward by its bargemaster. The stillness allows for a fine reflection of the sunlit gables of the houses of the Kromme Waal in the water. The tower of the St Nicolaas church stands as a fixture in the distance leaving no doubts as to the city the artist chose as his subject for the present lot. His beloved Amsterdam was only one of many places that he rendered to canvas on a regular basis. Alkmaar, Dordrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam are but a few of his other favourites. But also less likely places such as Edam and Baambrugge inspired the artist. The present lot is a testament to this prolific artistry and a good example of his proficiency.
