CIRCA 530-520 B.C.
The body depicting Herakles wrestling the Nemean lion, his quiver, bow and cloak hanging above, overlooked by Athena and Iolaos standing at either side, Athena with her shield in front emblazoned with two dolphins, Iolaos with Herakles' club, a quiver on his back, the panel bordered by ivy trail at the sides, linked lotus buds below and chequerboard band above
The shoulder with two pairs of warriors in duels, the neck with a band of suspended lotus, palmettes and ivy
Repaired with restored foot
16¾ in. (42.5 cm.) high

Provenance

Edward Davies Davenport (1778-1847) of Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire, and his younger brother the Rev. Walter Davenport Bromley (1787-1862) of Wootton Hall, Staffordshire, and thence by descent.

Carlos Picón, op.cit., notes that "in style it brings to mind the work of the Euphiletos Painter who is best known for his Panathenaic amphorae. He was mainly active in the 520s." It has also been attributed to the Euphiletos Painter by Dr. Robert Guy.
