The tureens appear to have been part of larger service made for Captain Schanck, who received in 1786 the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh and later rose to the rank of Admiral. He was in charge of the naval establishment at St. Johns in Newfoundland, during that time he built the Inflexible, a 300 ton gun ship, completing a naval victory at Lake Champlain against the Burgoyne army.
