Lot Essay

This is thought to be the original version which John Askew copied in 1788 and which is now in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (ref. Concise Catalogue of Oil Paintings in the National Maritime Museum, 1988, p.73, No. F, illustrated).
According to whaling records, the Sarah participated in the 1798 Arctic season as one of two vessels from Shields, England. In 1801, with T. Franks as her master, she joined the Newcastle fleet and her individual catch was 14 whales.
