Lot Essay

This self-portrait was made in the Hotel Royal Monceau, Paris. Newton lies on a greatly enlarged version of one of his last Big Nudes, shot in Nice the previous year. He planned and executed a landscape installation of these big Big Nudes, creating his own temporary Mount Rushmore of heroic female figures.
