The upper crest is the family crest of Nelson (On a wreath of the colours, upon waves of the sea, the stern of a Spanish man-of-war, all proper, thereon inscribed "San Joseff").
The lower crest is an honourable augmentation of a chelegk or plume of triumph above a naval crown. This records the presentation of a chelegk to Lord Nelson by the Grand Signior, Sultan Selin III of Turkey (1789-1807).

Lot Essay

A service of Fiddle pattern flatware mostly dated 1799-1800 and engraved with Nelson's crest was sold under The Property of the Great Granddaughter of Lady Nelson, wife of Admiral Lord Nelson at Christie's, 16 July 1896, lots 23-27.
