HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)
A GEORGE III SILVER BASTING SPOON, MARK OF WILLIAM ELEY AND WILLIAM FEARN, LONDON, 1798
Fiddle pattern, engraved with two crests, marked on back of handle
12in. (30.5cm.) long
4oz. (136gr.)
The upper crest is the family crest of Nelson (On a wreath of the colours, upon waves of the sea, the stern of a Spanish man-of-war, all proper, thereon inscribed "San Joseff").
The lower crest is an honourable augmentation of a chelegk or plume of triumph above a naval crown. This records the presentation of a chelegk to Lord Nelson by the Grand Signior, Sultan Selin III of Turkey (1789-1807).
