NEWS OF THE BATTLE OF THE NILE
A collection of six rare broadsides comprising:
Total Defeat and Capture of the French Fleet! [London: 2 October 1798]. Broadside (354 x 210mm). Double column. Woodcut Royal arms and two naval vignettes at head. Woodcut opening initial with figure of Mercury. (Slightly shaved at head, 3 lines of text torn with slight loss, other marginal tears.)
VERY RARE. PRINTED ON THE DAY THE NEWS OF NELSON'S VICTORY ARRIVED IN LONDON. The sub-title reads: 'The following is a true and particular account of the total defeat of the French fleet, by Sir Horatio Nelson, near Alexandria, on the 2d of August last, and capture of nine ships of the line, and burnt one of 120 guns, one of 74, and one of 36'. It is reported that this 'pleasing intelligence' was first received at Naples on 15 September, and that the Admiralty received Nelson's despatches on 2 October which is 'this morning'. Details are given of the number of ships and casualties on both sides. UNRECORDED IN ESTC.
Capture of Minorca. [?London: 1798]. Double column. Woodcut vignettes of a soldier and sailor at head. Dated in ms. Relates news of 'the capture of the whole island of Minorca, by the sea and land forces, under the command of General Stewart and Commodore Duckworth, on the 11th of November last'. UNRECORDED IN ESTC.
Death of Buonaparte. And the Dreadful Slaughter of the Republican Army. [?London: 1798]. Dated in ms. A sensational example of false intelligence. Received at East India House on 14 December, it led to this announcement of 'the death of General Buonaparte, who was shot by an Egyptian chief, while addressing a council of war at Grand Cairo. The inhabitants then fell on the French soldiers, and made a dreadful carnage'. UNRECORDED IN ESTC.
Defeat of the French Gun Boats. [?London: 1798]. Double column. Woodcut of a naval engagement at head. Dated in ms. This minor engagement involved 'the total defeat of the French gun-boats at the island of St. Marcou when seven were sunk, one taken, and the rest driven off, &c.' UNRECORDED IN ESTC.
Peace-Plenty. [?London: ?1797]. Double column. A 'historical account of the proceedings of the powers at war for obtaining a general peace; the articles already agreed upon; and the particulars of the convention which is to be held in Germany, for procuring a general peace for Europe'. Six British Tars beat Forty-Five Frenchmen. [?London: c. 1798]. Double column. Woodblock of a naval engagement [also used for the Defeat of the French Gun boats]. 'A full account of an action which took place a few days since, off Portsmouth, between the Joseph and Hannah collier, belonging to Sunderland, of one four-pounder, two small swivels, and five men and a boy, and a French lugger privateer, of eight guns, and 45 men, which the collier sunk, and all the crew perished'.
