HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)
Autograph letter signed ('Nelson & Bronte') to James Tulloch, Merton, 7 November 1801, one page, 4to, autograph address panel signed with initials ('N. & B.') and cut postal marking laid on to lower margin of letter, backed onto an album leaf; [and] Sir Thomas Picton (1758-1815). Autograph letter (3rd person) to Captain Hughes, Bond Street, 14 June 1804, announcing his intention of presenting the recipient with a sword 'to Chastise the Hostile Insolence of Usurpation', one page, 4to, laid onto verso of the same leaf; framed and double-glazed.
A REFERENCE TO THE AMPUTATION OF HIS ARM: Nelson writes, evidently to a surgeon seeking patronage for a naval appointment, 'Having just asked for the app[ointmen]t of the Gentleman who cut off my arm untill I know how he is disposed of it is impossible I could make a second application to the Board', promising neverthless to mention the recipient's name. After a musket wound during the abortive night attack on Santa Cruz, Tenerife, on 24 July 1797, Nelson's right arm was amputated on board the Theseus by the ship's surgeons, Thomas Eshelby and Louis Remonier.
