The Lloyd's Patriotic Fund responded to news of the great victory off Cape Trafalgar with an immediate release of funds to assist the wounded. Awards were made depending to rank and severity of wound. The maximum for an ordinary seaman was £40 indicating a permanent disability or loss of a limb.
