Lot Essay

The Mars was a fine '74' built at Deptford in 1794 which had already seen a great deal of action in the decade before Trafalgar. At Trafalgar, the Mars was engaged by several enemy ships in succession and severely damaged. Her captain George Duff was killed and the ship suffered a total of 98 casualties, she ended the day virtually unmanageable due to the loss of most of her yards and rudder damage. In 1848 the 6 surviving officers and 49 men from the Mars all received the Trafalgar clasp.
