Details
EMMA, LADY HAMILTON (1761?-1815)
Document signed (twice, on folded foot of first membrane and on verso of last membrane, 'Emma Hamilton'), 31 December 1807, also signed by Charles Rossi and his trustee, Edward Howard, granting Rossi and his heirs an annuity of £100 during the lifetime of his children, in exchange for a sum of £1,000, on vellum, five membranes, approximately 600 x 650mm (traces of wax seals).
Emma's raising £1,000 of capital on such unfavourable terms was certainly part of her efforts to settle debts which in only two years since Nelson's death had already become impressive; in spite of the actions of a number of benefactors, they were to lead to her arraignment in a debtors' prison in 1813.
