Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece by C. Heath after B. West, 10 hand-coloured engraved plates, 4 plates accompanied by hand-coloured engraved plans, 4 hand-coloured engraved head-pieces, one engraved plate, one engraved plan, and one facsimile plate. Diagrams and facsimiles in the text. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with: 11 hand-coloured engraved mounted proof plates on india from T.O. Churchill's The Life of Lord Viscount Nelson (London: 1808); 20 hand-coloured engraved plates inlaid to size, one facsimile plate; 3 letterpress extracts from The Monthly Mirror. (Variable light offsetting and occasional light spotting.) Contemporary diced russia gilt, boards with borders of triple gilt rules enclosing foliate borders, cornerpieces of the Earls of Essex's crowned 'SX' monograms, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, flat spines gilt in compartments, upper with crowned 'SX' monogram, lettered in 3, others decorated with floral and foliate tools, gilt edges (somewhat rubbed and scuffed, rebacked retaining original spines).
Provenance: Earls of Essex (binding, ?George Capell, 5th Earl of Essex, 1757-1839, succeeded to the title 1799).
FIRST EDITION. A COLOURED, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY. This copy was probably sold by the Earls of Essex in the early 20th century and appears to have then been coloured and extra-illustrated with some 30 plates (including 11 proof plates on india), before being re-backed at or around that time.
