NICOLAS BERGASSE
Éloge Historique du Général d'Hautpoul, Paris, 1807. 8° (243 x 153mm). Half-title (some light spotting and staining throughout). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, gilt imperial arms of Napoleon I on both covers [Olivier 2652, fer 11 (smaller version)], blue watered silk endpapers, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (a little light staining, spine and extremities slightly rubbed) retaining the earlier limp green morocco covers with, on front cover, gilt eagle tool at corners and a large crowned Napoleonic eagle with laurel wreath, lightning bolts, palm frond on sunburst and clouds, on back cover, crowned 'N' within a laurel wreath. LARGE PAPER COPY.

DEDICATION COPY TO NAPOLEON I, signed by 'Boilleau, notaire et adjoint-marie du 2eme arrondissement', friend of General Hautpoul and upon whose notes the work is based. Hautpoul (1754-1807) was a distinguished cavalry general, who after leading brilliant charges at Austerlitz and Jena was mortally wounded at the battle of Eylau. His body was taken back to Paris and interred in the Pantheon. Napoleon decreed that the canons captured at Eylau should be melted down and made into a statue of Hautpoul 'dans son uniforme de commandant des cuirassiers, et tel qu'il avait paru sur le champ de bataille pendant toute la journée' (Hoefer, Nouvelle Biographie Générale, vol XXIII, p.597), however, this was never done.
