A FINE GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL FOR A DISTINGUISHED NAVAL CAREER. Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Thomas Jones (1778-1853) entered the Navy on 2 May 1791 as Captain's Servant in the fireship Vulcan
(Captain Ferris) but transferred into the 74-gun Alcide later the same year. By 1793 he was serving in the 74-gun Leviathan (Captain Lord Hugh Seymour) and was present at the occupation of Toulon (August 1793) and also at Lord Howe's encounter with the French on 1 June 1794, the first fleet action of the War, where he was wounded. Promoted Midshipman in consequence, he was in the Sans Pareil for Lord Bridport's fleet action off the Île de Groix on 23 June 1795 and was subsequently made Lieutenant in October 1798. After a brief spell off the coast of Africa in the Fairy, Jones transferred into the 98-gun Neptune, Lord Gambia's flagship in the Channel, before going out to the East Indies in 1802-05. Knighted in 1809 and promoted Commander in 1810, he served in the sloop Harrier off the French coast until the end of the War and thereafter on the Halifax Station, North America, until paid off in December 1819. Made Captain earlier in 1819, he retired from the service in 1846 and received his final promotion to Rear-Admiral in 1851.
