Details
HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1785-1805)

Letter signed (in a very shaky left hand, 'Horatio Nelson'), with autograph date, superscript and address, to Sir John Orde, 1st Bart, Bath, 6 September 1797, 1½ pages, 4to, docketed by recipient.
Provenance: Sir John Orde, 1st Bart; and by descent.

RECUPERATING FROM THE LOSS OF HIS RIGHT ARM. Nelson writes in reply to Orde's enqiry as to his health, 'I am now under the Hands of Physician, Surgeon & Apothecary & by their joint operations I hope I shall do well'; he introduces his stepson ('Son-in Law') Josiah Nisbet to Orde's attention, and concludes with bloodthirsty wishes, 'that the Spanish Fleet may come out & salute you upon your arrival; is the sincere wish of your obliged Humble Servt Horatio Nelson'.

Having presided over the courts martial of the principal mutineers of the Nore at Portsmouth, Sir John Orde sailed on the Princess Royal to join the Mediterranean Fleet under St Vincent. Nelson's right arm had been amputated after an abortive attack on Santa Cruz, Tenerife, on 22 July; the wound caused considerable pain until the ligatures finally came away in November. Nelson's appointment the following spring to the squadron intended to hunt down Napoleon's expeditionary force to Egypt (the chase concluding with the Battle of the Nile) was to come as a bitter disappointment to the more senior Orde.
