HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)

Details
HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)

A small lock of Nelson's hair, mounted between glass in a small round frame; together with a fragment of crimson silk measuring approximately 45 x 55 mm, and a note by a member of the Nelson Ward family describing it as 'A piece of the Canopy that covered the body of Viscount Lord Nelson on board the Victory', one page, 90 x 110 mm.
Provenance: Horatia Nelson Ward, thence by descent.

Nelson's hair was, in accordance with his instructions in his Will, cut off before his body was prepared for transport back to England. The hair was given by Captain Hardy to Lady Hamilton, together with other personal effects and the letters she had written to him earlier in the month, which Hardy returned to her unopened. Small locks and pieces of hair were given to relations and clsoe friends and some pieces inserted in mourning rings and lockets. The pigtail was given by Horatia's children to Greenwich Hospital in 1881.
