THE NELSON-DAVISON SNUFF BOX

A silver snuff box (acquired by Alexander Davison after the Battle of Trafalgar) of oval form, the hinged lid engraved with Davison's monogram and a coronet, the lid inscribed This Box belonged to the late ADMIRAL LORD NELSON, and was in his possession at the time of his death., hallmarked for Cornlis Bland, 1798 -- 3in. (7.5cm.) diameter; contained within a tooled red morocco plush-lined case for Asprey & Garrard with silver plaque to lid inscribed SNUFF BOX WHICH BELONGED TO LORD NELSON. DONORS: SIXTY-SIX NAVAL OFFICERS, MEMBERS OF THE CLUB, 1917, FRAME MADE OF WOOD OF H.M.S. VICTORY -- 3 x 6½ x 4¼in. (7.5 x 16.5 x 11cm.); Copies of letters of provenance.

Davison was an inveterate collector of 'matchless' snuffboxes (the contents of the sale of his collection in 1817 evidences this). The crest bears the Davison arms which incorporate a spurious earl's coronet (perhaps representing his friendship with Nelson) which Alexander Davison was not entitled to use (as he held no titles) and which was the subject of a heated correspondence between him and the College of Arms in 1800.
