HMS Prince, one of the four 'London' class Second Rates designed by Surveyor Slade, was ordered in December 1779, laid down at Woolwich on New Year's Day, 1781 and launched on 4 July 1788. Measured at 1,871 tons, she was originally 177½ feet in length with a 49 foot beam but was lengthened by 17 feet during a rebuild in 1796, the first such vessel to be cut in half and increased in length by this method. Mounting an armament of twenty 32 pounders on her gundeck, thirty 18 pounders on her maindeck and thirty 12 pounders on her upper deck, she carried a crew of 750 officers and men. Present at Lord Bridport's fleet action against the French off the Île de Groix, Brittany, on 23 June 1795, she was briefly under the command of Collingwood in 1793 and fought at Trafalgar under Captain (later Sir) Richard Grindall. Hulked towards the end of her career, she was eventually broken up in 1837.
