NAPOLEON I (1769-1821)

Plan Routier de la Ville et Fauxbourgs de Paris. Divisé en Douze Mairies. Paris: Esnauts, An XIII [1805]. Folding engraved map, hand-coloured in outline, dissected and mounted on linen (780 x 540mm). (Pin holes with small loss at corners, linen with some wear at corners and folds.) Contemporary green morocco, upper side gilt with 'Cabinet de Sa Majesté l'Empereur. Paris', lower side gilt with Napoleon's crowned cypher against a field of imperial eagles and stars (one corner with small loss, small pinholes in two corners).
Provenance: Napoleon Bonaparte (binding).

NAPOLEON'S MAP OF PARIS, bound with his crowned cypher and eagle, for his cabinet perhaps at St Cloud which became the imperial residence after 1804. The old pin-holes suggest that the map may have been put up in his office, and perhaps considered in defensive plans for Paris. Cf. Olivier 2652.
