NAPOLEON I (1769-1821)

Document signed ('Napoleon'), the draft of a decree referring to the arrangements for his coronation as King of Italy, including autograph insertions (approximately 15 words in 'Article 2'), autograph cancellations (5 lines scored through in 'Article 3'), and an autograph addition of four lines ('Article 4', at the end), n.p. [La Malmaison], 22 March 1805, in French, 1½ pages, folio.

Announcing the coronation to be held in Milan on 23 May next, the decree lists those who are to be summoned to attend in addition to ministers and the King's attendants, including Electoral Colleges, Council of State, Legislative Council and Corps, Tribunal of Cassation, Archbishops and Bishops, Prefects and other officials, to which Napoleon has added in autograph, 'les generaux de division et de la garde les colonels de [....]', and 'les colonels de service'.

Napoleon's three month visit to Italy, from 1 April to 11 July 1805, was his first journey outside French territory since the battle of Marengo. The transformation of the Italian Republic into a kingdom had been first discussed in 1804, when Joseph Bonaparte was the preferred candidate for the throne, but on 18 March 1805 Napoleon took the title of King of Italy for himself. In April he spent some days at Turin where he held a final meeting with Pope Pius VII. The coronation took place in the Duomo on 26 May, three days later than announced in the present document. He was invested with the regalia of the former Holy Roman Emperors and crowned himself with the iron crown of Lombardy. Two thousand crosses of the newly created Légion d'Honneur were given to the French army, and a figure of Napoleon was installed among the holy statues on the cathedral roof. The ceremony was attended by neither the Pope nor the Emperor of Austria. Within a few days Napoleon's stepson, Prince Eugène, was appointed as Viceroy.

The decree is not included in the published letters and documents for 1805 (Correspondance, vol. X).
