NAPOLEON I (1769-1821)
Letter signed ('Nap') to the Comte de Flahaut, Paris, 18 April 1815, ½ page, 4to (integral leaf removed, slightly browned, a few light spots).
Provenance. Emily, Marchioness of Lansdowne (1819-1895, daughter of Charles, Comte de Flahaut de la Billarderie, and wife of Henry, 4th Marquess of Lansdowne); and by descent; Christie's sale of Important Autograph Letters from the Historical Archives at Bowood House, 12 October 1994 (lot 51).
NAPOLEON'S RIGHT-HAND MAN DURING THE HUNDRED DAYS. Napoleon proposes to put Flahaut in charge of all matters of military personnel, requiring him to gather as much information as possible on the generals and officers 'parceque si je fais de mauvais choix, c'est a vous que je m'en prendrai'. Flahaut rejoined Napoleon on his entry into Paris on 13 March, and was at once reinstated as his aide-de-camp. He was at Napoleon's side throughout the Hundred Days. Marshal Davout, Minister of War, was reported to be greatly offended by the powers conferred upon him by this letter.
