Lot Essay

Compare with Catalogue Number 324B, Catalogue d'Etoffes Anciennes et Modernes decrites par Madame Isabelle Errera, Musées Royaux du Cinqantenaire, Brussels, for a textile which appears identical except for the addition of an intermediate row of seated courtiers. The Errera textile was acquired in 1901 from Baron in Paris and is dated to the 16th/17th century. This dating seems now slightly optimistic

The present lot is a witness to the fact that the Persian velvet industry continued to produce high quality velvets after the high point in the early Safavid Dynasty. Versions of this velvet continued to be woven throughout the Qajar Dynasty.
