Lot Essay

The Church of S. Miniato was built on the site of a pre-existing oratory built to honour St. Miniato, the first evangelist and Christian martyr in Florence. The church is one of the finest examples of pure Florentine Romanesque architecture. The building work began in 1018 under the directorship of Bishop Ildebrando and continued until 1207. The facade at the entrance is decorated with white Carrara and green Prato marble tiles arranged in geometric patterns.
