Lot Essay

The Roman Forum is one of the most powerful symbols of Civilisation in the world. Its basic form was copied throughout the Roman world. The magnificent remains of its buildings have inspired artists for centuries.

The Forum was the administrative, judicial and commercial centre of Republican Rome. The general layout of the site was established under the Etruscan kings in the 6th Century B.C., when the marsh was drained and paved, and public buildings erected along its periphery. The most elaborate of its monuments were erected during the Imperial era (after 27 B.C.). Both Thomas Hartley Cromek and Robert Henry Cheney made studies of a number of these sites.
