The Villa Borghese was the residence of the powerful Borghese family of Italian ecclesiastics, patrons and collectors from 1615. Among the many important family members to live at the Villa Borghese was Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a passionate art collector who built the Villa and over his lifetime amassed an extraordinary collection of paintings and sculpture. At the beginning of the 19th Century, Camillo Borghese married Napoleon (I's) sister Pauline and sold many of the antiquities to the Emperor, while the remaining sculptures and the painting collection were sold to the State in 1902 and are now housed in the Galleria Borghese in the Villa Borghese.
