The ground decoration found on the present plate is based on a Chinese textile. Several variant services using the distinct blue trellis ground were made, the variations occurring in the gilding pattern and the subjects of the painted reserves. The three best known variations are painted with flowers, with scenes based on Aesop's fables, and the present hunting service. A lobed oval stand from the same service as the present example from the collection of Forsythe Wickes is conserved at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. See Geneviève Le Duc, Porcelain tender de Chantilly au XVIII Siècle, 1996, p. 243, color plate for this lozenge-shape dish.
