Lot Essay

An aristocrat turned revolutionary, Louis-Michel Le Pelletier de Saint Fargeau voted in favor of guillotining Louis XVI and was himself assassinated in a cafi 21 January 1793, the day after the vote and on the eve of the king's death. Le Pelletier de Fargeau was given a state funeral and hailed as a republican martyr.
