Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste Tandart is recorded at Vincennes and Shvres as a flower painter 1754-1803.

The decoration on the present saucer is often confused with that of the service presented by Louis XV to Empress Maria-Theresa of Austria. This service has similar gilt-edged green ribbons entwined to form a figure-8. See anonymous sale, Christie's London, 5 December 1994, lot 103 for two bottle coolers similarly decorated.
