Lot Essay

The mark of a caduceus is found on pieces painted with landscapes and dated 1756-1759. See David Peters, Decorator and Date Marks on C18th Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, privately printed, 1997, p. 90.

See also Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain from a New England Collection; Christie's New York, 5 May 1999, lot 60 for a cup and saucer and a sugar-bowl cover similarly marked and painted. It is likely that these pieces along with the missing sugar-bowl formed a Déjeuner Porte-Huilier.
