The present plate is from a group of wares decorated in imitation of Chinese lacquer and produced at Sèvres over the course of about fifteen years starting 6 May 1791 when the first of such services, comprising 180 pieces and described as service fond noir, chinois en or de couleurs et platine, fleurs émaillées (black-ground service, Chinese decoration in colored golds and platinum, enameled flowers), was sold to the marquis de Sémonville, Louis XVI's ambassador to Genoa. In her article, Ms. Schwartz details known services with this decoration including several sets of plates made between 1798 and 1802 to which the present example likely belongs.
