Lot Essay
See The René Fribourg Collection: V, French Faience and European Porcelain, Part 2, Sotheby & Co., London, 15 October 1963, lots 414 and 415 for the sugar-bowl and cover and the cup and saucer that originally formed a déjeuner with the present tray. The cup and saucer have the painter's mark of Charles Buteux l'aîné, recorded at Sèvres 1756-1782 as a painter specializing in trophies and almost certainly the painter of the trophy on the present tray. The mark on the tray for Pierre-Antoine Méreaud père, recorded at Sèvres as a painter specializing in both flowers and ground patterns 1754-1791, appears also on the Fribourg sugar-bowl.
