Lot Essay
The 'Service Iconographic Français' was delivered to the Château de Trianon for the King on 24 November 1824 except for the two sucriers which were returned to the factory (MNS. Archives Registre Vbb 6, folio 143 verso). It had been entered into the sales shop records, probably in advance, on 4 December 1824 (ibid. Registre Vvi, folio 226, no. 17). The service originally comprised 90 plates at 80 francs each, 2 sucriers, 24 mounted plates and 16 compotiers in four shapes.
Two plates from this service, painted with portraits of Louis XIV's mistress, Françoise d'Aubigni, Marquise de Maintenon, and of François de Chevert, were sold anonymously, Christie's London, 22 June 1992. A third, depicting the noted historian François Etudes de Mézerai, was also sold anonymously, Sotheby's New York, 22 May 1997, lot 35.
