Lot Essay

The present model, a variation on the Trépied antique designed and produced uniquely for the Service de l'Empereur, was intended as part of a surtout de table based on the Seasons that was never produced. Several examples of the répied d'Apoloon, none special orders, are recorded in the factory's records with various selling prices. Among these are two decorated in matte gold at a cost of 750 francs each, a single with no decoration specified at 500 francs, and what would today be termed a 'factory second' at 300 francs.

The present pair may very well be the Deux "Trépieds d'Apollon décorés en or priced at 750 francs each and delivered to the Trianon Palace 20 March 1843. (Registre Vbb 10, folio 110).

The incised Mas mark found on one is that of either of Jean Mascaret, recorded at Sèvres as a sculptor 1806-1848, or of his son Louis, recorded at the factory in the same position 1825-1864.
